In Long Xuyen City, An Giang Province, South Vietnam, a small Muslim community has turned the second floor of a member’s house into a temporary mosque and Islamic learning center. They dream of having a proper place of worship and hope that support from Indonesia and the global Muslim community can help make this dream a reality.
Unlike Indonesia, where mosques are widespread, Vietnam has a much smaller Muslim population. According to the 2020 census, there are only about 80,000 Muslims in Vietnam out of 97 million people. Islamic places of worship and educational facilities remain extremely limited, especially for Muslim children.

In May 2022, during a visit for the 31st SEA Games in Vietnam, the Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Cultural Affairs, along with the Indonesian Ambassador to Hanoi, visited Long Xuyen, home to around 18,000 Muslims. Recognizing the urgent need for a proper mosque, discussions began on the possibility of supporting the construction of Masjid Salamat in the city.

Since then, the Indonesian Embassy in Hanoi and the Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City have been actively engaging with the local Muslim community, who warmly welcome the idea of Indonesia and the global Muslim community helping to build this much-needed mosque.
The Indonesian Ambassador to Hanoi has officially submitted a diplomatic note to Vietnam’s Ministry of Home Affairs, proposing the construction of Masjid Salamat as part of Indonesia-Vietnam social and cultural cooperation. This initiative is expected to strengthen people-to-people relations and promote halal industry collaboration between the two nations.
