One Light, One Hope: Bringing Light to Tuakara’s Isolated Community

Help Berbagi Bahagia Foundation install solar-powered lights in Tuakara Village, North Halmahera, a community that has lived without electricity since Indonesia’s independence. Together, we can brighten homes, empower families, and light up young dreams.

Imagine living your whole life in darkness with no power to light your home, no light for your children to study, no electricity to store food or medicine safely.
This is reality for the families of Tuakara Village, an isolated island community in Loloda Kepulauan, North Halmahera, Maluku Utara. Since Indonesia’s independence, Tuakara’s 130 households have never had access to electricity from the national grid.

Instead, families rely on oil lamps or battery-powered torches barely enough for basic needs. Most villagers are fishermen and coconut farmers who work hard to survive but earn too little to afford solar panels or batteries on their own. Even when coconut prices rise, the cost of rice and oil rises too, keeping families in a constant struggle.

The absence of electricity not only impacts convenience, but also directly affects the future of the younger generation and the quality of life of residents. Children have difficulty studying at night due to limited light. Residents' economic activities can only be carried out from sunrise to sunset, limiting daily productivity. The absence of cold storage facilities makes fishermen's catches spoil quickly and makes it difficult to store vaccines or medicine at the village health post. In addition, the absence of electricity makes residents even more isolated from the development of outside information and communication. This reality shows that Tuakara is not yet fully independent, and lighting is a basic right that should be accessible to all Indonesian citizens, without exception.
