Hundreds Killed and Thousands Injured in Israeli Attacks on Lebanon
The death toll from Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon since Monday (23/09) continues to rise. At least 558 people have been killed, including 50 children, and 1,835 others injured in what has been described as the deadliest assault since the end of the civil war in 1990.
Thousands of families have fled their homes in southern Lebanon, with many stranded on the streets, caught in traffic jams in Beirut.
Cross-border attacks between Israel and Lebanon continued on Tuesday (24/09), with schools closed in both countries and many Lebanese residents seeking refuge.
Tensions along the border are escalating, raising fears of a larger regional conflict.
Lebanon’s Minister of Health, Firass Abiad, reported that 1,835 people were injured in the Israeli attacks, noting that medical staff are working tirelessly to treat all the patients.
During a press conference, he told reporters that the health sector is in dire need of support and expressed hope that the situation would not worsen.
Abiad also revealed that four paramedics were killed on Monday (23/09) when ambulances and clinics were struck by Israeli attacks.
He added that thousands of families have been displaced as a result of the attacks.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres voiced his concern over the escalating tensions, stating that he does not want Lebanon to suffer the same fate as Gaza.
European Union foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell described the escalation as extremely dangerous and alarming, warning that the situation is on the brink of a full-scale war.
